Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts

The Puyallup Band Program continues to offer the opportunity to learn music and achieve excellence through the mastery of playing woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments in grades 5-12. Students will learn and develop general musical knowledge along with instrument specific skills during band class rehearsals. Students culminate their work with performances for their families and the community throughout the school year.

The Puyallup School District offers a comprehensive general music education for students from kindergarten through sixth grade. Through engaging in music creation, performance, and response, students actively explore the many dimensions of music. These general music classes provide opportunities to develop an appreciation for music history and diverse cultural traditions, build music literacy, participate in movement and dance, and experience singing and playing a variety.

• Curriculum Overview - The K‑6 curriculum is a spiral, experiential program that introduces musical fundamentals early and builds toward creative, collaborative, and culturally rich music-making by Grade 6.

  • Conceptual Progression: Builds systematically - Beat > Rhythm > Pitch > Notation > Harmony > Composition.

  • Integrated Musical Practices: Combines singing, movement, instrument play (Orff, recorder, percussion), and technology-enhanced projects.

  • Cultural and Historical Context: Includes world percussion (African, Latin), music history across eras, and culturally responsive resources.

  • Creative Composition Emphasis: Students continuously compose and perform, particularly in Grades 3–6 through themed projects.

  • Assessment & Formative Tools: Built-in assessments throughout modules; final performances and digital pre/post evaluations ensure measurable growth.

The Puyallup Orchestra programs offer students in grades 5-12 the opportunity to develop their musical skills through sequential learning and performing a diverse range of orchestral literature. Students will enhance their instrumental technique, music reading abilities, and ensemble skills while participating in rehearsals and public performances. These programs offer instruction on the Violin, Viola, Cello, and String Bass.
